What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping how AI assistants describe your organization when they answer questions about you. Instead of competing for a position in a ranked list of links, you are competing to be represented — accurately and favorably — inside the single answer an AI generates.

The shift is structural. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity "who are the leading firms in this space?" they do not receive ten links to evaluate. They receive one synthesized paragraph. AEO is the discipline of making sure that paragraph is correct about you — the problem Suede's platform is built to solve.

How is AEO different from SEO?

AEO optimizes for inclusion inside a synthesized answer; SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of links. That difference changes the goal. In classic search there is a list to climb and a click to earn. In an AI answer there is frequently no list at all — there is one answer, and you are either in it, misrepresented in it, or missing from it entirely.

The inputs differ too. AI assistants weight clear, factual, well-structured sources they can quote directly. Answer-first writing, consistent entity descriptions across your own properties, and machine-readable structure all raise the odds that an engine pulls from you rather than from a competitor or a stale third party. This post is written the same way — each section opens with a direct answer — because that is exactly the structure an engine prefers to lift.

Why does AEO matter now?

AEO matters because the AI answer is increasingly the first impression, and the audiences who form it have already moved. 89% of B2B buyers now use generative AI to research purchases (Forrester), and 60% of Americans read AI-generated answers in search results (Pew Research Center). By the time a prospect, journalist, or analyst reaches you, an assistant has usually already framed the category and named the players.

The stakes are just as high in the public sector. Roughly 90% of federal agencies have adopted AI (Google Public Sector), and 55% of state legislative staff already use generative AI (NCSL). The buyers, regulators, and officials who decide your fate research you through AI first — which is why the stakes read differently for a corporate reputation team than for one in a regulated industry, even though the underlying mechanic is identical.

That is the core problem: AI is already telling these audiences a story about you, whether or not you are managing it. If the answer is outdated, unfavorable, or simply absent, that gap scales silently across everyone who asks.

How do you measure and improve AEO?

You measure AEO by running a representative set of prompts through the major AI assistants on a recurring schedule and analyzing the results. Track whether you appear, how you are characterized, which sources get cited, and how you stack up against named competitors. Watching those answers move over time turns an invisible narrative into a surface you can manage.

Improving it is a two-part discipline. First, monitor what the assistants actually say — across tens of thousands of prompts per day, with personas that mirror how a real buyer, analyst, or regulator asks. Then optimize the entity signals, sources, and structured content that move those answers in your favor. That monitor-then-influence loop is exactly what Suede is built to run.
